Preparation

How do we transform the way songs are produced, from writing lyrics to creating melodies?

Focusing on the objectives of co-creating and establishing the collaboration between human creativity and artificial intelligence, we have explored various music generators available online. The list of AI-generated tools attatched will develop lyrics, melodies, beats, and other components that make up a song.

Despite having no prior knowledge or experience in music production, we came out with our own system of producing music, segmenting the process into three sections - generating the melodes, writing lyrics and laying down vocal tracks.

Audio Production

The purpose of this project is to challenge our limitations and to iterate various versions of songs in order to demonstrate convincing musical styles. Using this approach, a message will be conveyed regarding AI's potential to become a part of existing music production processes.

This project utilizes two songs along with three different versions of remixes: the easy-listening remix with the most standard and natural sounds, the medium-listening remix with a unique kick, and the hard-listening remix with an intense, maniacal, and discomforting sound.

Taking into account the feedback we received, our group decided to come up with three different sets of music that have contrasting listening experiences.

Below is a breakdown of the production process of two tracks from Turnip Love.

Example Track 1:
Turnip Love feat. Emma (Neep Remix)

  • Instrumentals created using Melobytes AI music tool (mp3 below) and beats generated from Musicca Drum Machine

  • Lyrics written by Song Lyrics Generator and Emma's vocal track created with Uberduck (mp3 below)

Example Track 2:
Only Love feat. J. Cole (Solo Remix)

  • Melodic background track was created using Langorhythm conditioned by the lyric input (mp3 below)

  • Lyrics by theselyricsdonotexist and J. Cole's vocal track produced with Uberduck (mp3 below)

  • Additional layer of background music track auto-generated with Melobytes surprise (mp3 below)

Visual Production

For the final artefact, our group decided to make a physical album containing a poster-lyrics sheet and a CD. The choice of a physical CD is to package the audio and the visual components into a single tangible form. To respond fully to our main topic, visual explorations for the album art and poster designs were created by text prompt image generators Craiyon and Midjourney.

Furthermore, we have produced a series of images relying on the keywords associated with the song lyrics. To achieve these captivating graphic visuals, the process of altering keywords from the auto-generated lyrics, generating outcomes, and repeating and re-generating was executed.

As our EP's main genre is hip-hop/rap, we have taken inspiration from the strong visuals of hip-hop culture when determining our creative direction. Besides graffiti and black lettering, the album art also depicts close-up portraits of the artists, which is inspired by the bold visual language of the existing albums.
